Sweet and sour lovers will rejoice when their taste buds hit this salad. A light, tangy flavor coats broccoli, tomatoes, lettuce, walnuts and ramen noodles. This may be the first time youve used ramen noodles in a salad, but try it and experience the yummy results.

1 (3 oz.) package ramen noodles
1 cup chopped walnuts
1/4 cup butter
6 cups romaine lettuce, torn
4 cups broccoli florets
1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
4 green onions, sliced

Salad Dressing

1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup sugar
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
4 1/2 teaspoons soy sauce
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Break ramen noodles into small pieces (you wont be needing the flavor packet).

Saute ramen noodles and walnuts in a skillet over medium heat for 5 - 6 minutes, or until lightly browned. Let cool.

In a large bowl, add romaine lettuce, broccoli, tomatoes and onions.

In a blender or food processor, add vegetable oil, sugar, red wine vinegar, soy sauce, salt and pepper. Blend ingredients until sugar is dissolved.

Combine dressing and noodle mixture with salad. Toss until coated. Serve immediately.

Using Get and Set Might Be Something Youll Regret

Its an all-too-common pitfall. Programmers who attempt to write object-oriented code decide to make all of their data variables private, while creating public get() and set() function pairs for each one. See? they declare, as they pat themselves on their backs. The data is private, but it can be accessed through these functions. Ive encapsulated my data. Thats what object-oriented design requires.

I think this betrays a fundamental (and exceedingly common) misunderstanding of what constitutes encapsulation and information hiding. Ideally, in an object-oriented design, the user of a software class should have no idea what type of data the class contains. As far as hes concerned, the class should simply provide the required services, and its internal details should be invisible. However, when we provide get() and set() function pairs for each member variable, we are basically announcing the existence of this data to the world. The information hiding provided by this class is weakand arguably non-existent. One might change the name, data type or implementation of this member variable, but its existence remains painfully obvious to everyone.

(Note that I say that the user should ideally be oblivious to the type of data contained within the class. In practice, this is not always feasible. If we were to implement a BankAccount class, for example, most programmers would immediately guess that this class would have the account balance as one of its data members. They would also guessrightfully sothat the owner of this account is likely to be data member as well. Nevertheless, we should avoid needlessly divulging such details, especially when the contents of a class are not so easily discerned.)

In effect, these get() and set() member functions are almost as bad as having public data. Sure, they may provide some useful services; for example, the set() function could validate the data, ensuring that it is within the proper range of values. Nevertheless, they tend to violate the spirit of information hiding, at least to some degree.

Using get() and set() functions is not always a bad idea; in fact, sometimes they make perfect sense. Their frequent use, however, is a pretty good indication of a poorly abstracted software designone that does not adhere well to the principle of information hiding. When designing software classes, we need to think primarily in terms of the services they provide (i.e. their public functions), rather than the data they contain. Ideally, their data implementations should proceed from the required services, rather than other way around.

To illustrate this concept, let us revisit the BankAccount class mentioned earlier. It is clear that the BankAccount object will need to keep track of its balance, so lets make that a data member. A novice programmer (or one with a poor grasp of object orientation) may choose to provide both GetBalance() and SetBalance() functions for this class but does this make sense?

What happens when a user attempts to make a deposit? The user would have to call GetBalance(), add the deposit amount, and then set the new value using GetBalance(). Thats not how real users operate, though; in the real world, there is no need for the depositor to know how much money is in the account. This class design gives the user too much information and requires too many steps.

Similarly, to perform a withdrawal, the user would need to call GetBalance(), subtract the withdrawal amount, and then call SetBalance() to update the account. This also requires too much work on the users part. In the real world, the user should not always be required to know exactly how much money is in the account. This person might want to know that there are sufficient funds, but he wouldnt necessarily need to know the precise balance, and this information should not be a constant requirement.

A sensibly written class should provide the following services instead: DepositAmount(), WithdrawAmount() and GetBalance(). With this design, the data memberthe account balanceis logically implied by the services provided, rather than the other way around. (We could define other services, such as AccrueInterest() and TransferFunds(), but lets keep it simple for now. Note that these services might suggest additional data members; for example, AccrueInterest() would suggest that a data member would be needed for the interest rate.)

In summary, get() and set() function pairs are not inherently bad, but their preponderance could suggest a poorly abstracted software design. Theres nothing inherently wrong with using get() and set() functions when they form part of a sensibly designed set of services. Nor is there anything wrong with using a data member to reflect these functions. When one proceeds in the opposite direction, thoughwhen one starts with the data members, then adds corresponding get() and set() pairsthats a strong indication of a poorly conceived software design.

It's common wisdom that all any service professional or consultants needs to be successful is "passion". Let it be known here that passion alone can be overrated. When you're building a practice, you need more than passion. You need more than a high level of dedication and energy to succeed. You need a plan. A marketing plan with a marketing budget to be exact.

We've all seen this scenario played out in some form in your hometown. Typically, it begins as some starry-eyed owner rents retail space. The newly minted entrepreneur then spends his capital on cash registers, inventory and store signage.

When it's time to open the doors to the shop, the owner is tapped out. The new business, struggling along on the thread bare path of "word of mouth" waits impatiently as bills mount and customers trickle in at a painfully slow pace. Your Toll Free Number Could Be Turning Customers Away

When I launched my company, Championship Communication, ten years ago, a veteran entrepreneur advised me, "Get your toll free number right away." He argued that I would attract more clients and keep ongoing clients happy if they could call me at no charge.

"But," I asked, "isn't that quite expensive?"

"No, Bill, it's surprisingly reasonable, and it will be well worth the moderate cost because of your increase in customers."

Following his advice, I got an 800 number and displayed it on my stationery, Web site, business card, and E-mail signature. For a decade, I mentioned that number when I was leaving a voice mail message for an out of town contact I had called and missed.

Then not long ago, I started rethinking whether my toll free number was gaining business for me. Discussing this with a professional speaker colleague, I was surprised to hear him say, "People who want you to have a toll free number, so they can save three or four dollars when they call you, are unlikely to be able-or willing-to pay the professional fees your experience merits. If they are so cost conscious that they don't think they could afford to call you, then how will they change that mind set to invest in your services?"

His idea startled me. At the same time, his logic seemed sound. Over the next few months, I started looking at my monthly telephone bill to see who was using my 800 number to reach me. The answer: mostly friends and relatives.

Even worse, one company I had never heard about printed my toll free number as the contact number for its customer service department. I spent some agonizing times assuring callers I had nothing to do with that company.

Also, I reasoned, in the era when many calls originate from people using cell phones, the savings an 800 number once promised are likely to be obsolete. With most providers, cell phone minutes used are cell phone minutes, period.

Then I thought back to my twenty-three years in management. Like every manager, I fielded numerous calls from sales people who wanted to talk with me about their product or service. How did I decide which calls to return from someone whose name meant nothing to me? Simple - I eliminated the calls from strangers with toll free numbers. I knew I was in for a sales pitch, and with my packed schedule taking time for those calls would not demonstrate wise time management.

Remembering that, I wondered how many people had filtered me out of their calls-to-return list since 1996 because of my 800 prefix.

However, I didn't want to trust my intuition alone. So I surveyed twenty-five professional speakers I had become acquainted with through our state and national associations. Included in my survey: the speakers with the most book sales, highest fees, packed calendars, and greatest reputations. Most I reached by E-mail, and with the rest I simply checked their Web sites.

The results astonished me. Out of the twenty-five, only eight have toll free numbers. The seventeen others were prospering nicely with ordinary phone lines. The most significant indicator: a speaker with a $20,000 keynote fee publishes his office and cell phones, but no toll free number.

So I took the logical next steps. I called the phone company and cancelled my toll free number. I notified my friends and relatives who had been using the number that it was no longer active. The tech professional who makes requested changes in my Web site eliminated the number from those pages, and even from the "landing pages" accessed through Google. And I eliminated the number from my formal E-mail signature.

Do I fret because the toll free number remains on my business card and stationery? Not really, certainly not enough to order a fresh batch of both. I'll change those eventually. Meanwhile, from what I have learned I will not be missing out with top-tier prospects.

I recommend that you evaluate whether my findings match your professional niche. If your toll free number attracts mostly friends, relatives, and marketers who want you to spend money on them, it's time to switch to a traditional phone number. You'll save substantial dollars annually, and more importantly you will attract the caliber of callers you want to do business with.

The inconvenience of building an opt-in mailing list using PPC (pay per click) search engines, is the cost connected to it. The following technique can reduce and even neutralize these costs and at the same time quickly build an email list for your chosen niche market.

Many internet marketers stress the importance of having your own mailing list, as this is where a more important stream of income may come from, within your online business. However, when entering a new niche market the challenge is often to build the new list quickly from start.

Getting free search engine traffic may take months and a lot of optimization & link building work, before seeing any results. One solution is to use PPC search engines which delivers instant traffic to your website and opt-in form. But how do we get rid of some of the costs a pay per click solution involves?

First, an opt-in mailing list is an email list a visitor choose to sign up to when visiting a web page, to get information delivered to their email box. They also usually have to confirm this subscription by doing a one-click confirmation in the sign-up email sent to them, before the information is delivered. This is to protect the visitor from getting unwanted information. At this point they have approved the subscription and is on the opt-in mailing list.

In this technique i'm going to show you, one has to think long term ROI (return of investment) as this method is just meant to reduce or erase the inital cost of getting a subscriber to your list. The real, long term value after that, is the opportunity to follow up your subscribers with useful, free information and at times offering them products, services, reviews etc., which he or she may be interested in.

If you do it right, you can end up with total sales income from your list, greater than the total subscriber cost, thus getting you on the profitable side. As the targeted subscriber list grows, the more income you can expect from it.

A subscriber which is given valuable free information over time, will be far more open to trust and buy from you, when offered products and services as well. An example is one of my niche websites, targeted to the stock market, which as of this writing has grown to 1100 opt-in subscribers and is a consistent source of income through affiliate links integrated into free stock market market updates, delivered via email. The value of these free market updates also ensure low unsubscription rates.

Just one simple day trading software banner, which shows up at the end of every update, has alone generated enough income to more than cover my monthly electricity expenses. In addition comes ebook sales and more. It's not a huge revenue but is just one income stream among several others, which added together gives good extra income besides a regular day job. If a regular guy like me (educated as a car mechanic) can build an online income, so can you. The key is to continue building websites and opt-in lists in profitable niche markets, until a full income goal is reached.

This PPC cost reducing method may help to increase profit margins even more:

On your domain, create a simple "landing page" with an opt-in form, which is presented to the targeted visitor when they click on a PPC ad. Focus on the benefits of subscribing to your free email list, what's in it for them. By offering them bonuses like a free report, ebook, ecourse, tool, etc., a higher subscription rate could be the result.

At the top, center of the page, code in a Google Adsense ad in the 728x90 format. For more information on how Adsense can generate an income for you, do a Google search for "Adsense" and you will find plenty of suggestions and tutorials.

Remove any Adsense ad border, change general ad colors to blend in with the color of your page. Black ad text against a white background page is the best. Now, to the main point, what this Adsense ad will do for you is to put money in your Adsense account, whenever a visitor clicks on one of the ads. Of course, a visitor may also leave without any actions at all.

In the list building process, this combination of Adsense income and an opt-in form on the same page, can overall help reduce or even neutralize the cost of getting targeted visitors from pay per click search engines, into your newsletter.

Income from Adsense can vary from a few cents up to dollars per click, depending on your target market. To give a clue and a perspective on how valuable Adsense can be for you, there are many people out there making a good living from Adsense based websites alone, even without running any newsletters. But in my opinion, having a mailing list to promote to, is after all a reliable way compared to any unpredictable changes in external programs.

An Online Business - A Great Second Income For Those In Ministry

You have recognized Gods call on your life and you know that you are called to serve Him. Perhaps youve been called to be a pastor. Perhaps youve been called to be a missionary or an evangelist. No matter what your calling may be, you may still have to have a tent making occupation, a second income to support yourself while your ministry develops.
